Best South Asian Books

A place for us by Fatima Farheen Mirza

A place for us is a book about a Shia family that deals with a lot of family problems. Full of misunderstanding and complicated family issues. If you are from a brown family you will relate to the book. It is a real tear jerker. You will be shedding tears by the end.

Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

Secret Daughter is about an adopted woman who goes back to india to discover her roots. It is a fast read. Other books by Shilpa Somaya are good as well such a Golden Son and Shape of Family.

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

Set in Afghanistan during the Taliban rule in this book you will see the issues faced by Afghanis. The problems faced if you had no male in your family. How some young females would pretend to be males to run their family. Little children had to take the role of family leaders. It is a story about displacement and human tragedy.

Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Another book set in Afghanistan at the type of war. Kite runner is about friendship and history and so much more. It is a must read.

Love Inshallah by Ayesha Mattu

Short stories about the secret love lives of Muslim women.

Well behaved Indian women by Saumya Dave

A book about a daughter, a mother and a grandmother. You see the difference and similarities in their life. The book is about family issues and misunderstanding and coming together.

More than just a pretty face by Syed M. Masood

This a fast read and a rom com. Now I wouldn’t read this if you are looking for something super intellectual. But I love a cheesy south Asian romantic book. This is my guilty pleasure.  The story line is about a boy who is in love with a popular girl. He then starts hanging out for a project with another girl. Who will he end up with? It has the added line of the boy being a chef which always makes a cute story.
